The RV Maria S. Merian set sail from Edinburgh on Tuesday evening (16th October) on the latest STEMM-CCS expedition. The short expedition to the Scanner Pockmark area in the North Sea aims to obtain sediment core samples from the Scanner Pockmark using the British Geological Survey’s Rock Drill 2 system. In addition downhole logging data will be collected.

The sediment cores will be analysed back on shore using geochemical and geophysical techniques. This information, in combination with previously collected seismic, hydroacoustic and electromagnetic data will be used to establish information about the permeability of the sediments.

Developments during the cruise can be followed via our expedition blog.
